A router stuck in Purgatory

By novo

netgear It’s not bad. It could be better. It could be worse. Quite frankly, it’s so-so.

We can tell you one thing, it’s one heck of a baptized baby compared to our previous routing experience.

Just before we lost all hope, the Netgear WNR834 RangeMax NEXT Wireless-N Router happened to be sitting next to our returned abomination. So we thought we’d give the world of wireless one more try before we all quit life.

After unboxing, initial setup was a breeze. It took us less than 10 minutes. After that, it just worked, which is very unusual for routers these days.

Being true to its back box diagram, the WNR834 really did extend its range throughout an entire house.

The frequency traveled through every wall into every room in the building.

But what if you wanted to work outside? In the rain? At night? Without pants? To be sure, we attempted to use our connection intensively outside the building. We were surprised to find the range and speed to be well above our expectations. In fact, within 10 feet of the building we still had full capacity. However, you can definitely notice a reduction in speed the further you get from the router, though for basic work purposes it’s negligible.

Now for gamers and instances where more than 3 devices will be connected, this router begins to lose its luster. The speed reduction is significantly noticed after 3 devices are connected at the same time and graphic-intensive multilayer games tend to lag frequently, causing great distress.

As for the casual internet consumer, this router will be perfect for your needs.

Bottom.Paratus: A very good home router for basic use. Hardcore gamers and businesses should consider looking elsewhere for a more efficient, less painful wireless experience.
