The Apple iPad Rumor Is No More

By novo

ipad announcementNo, it’s not for women’s menstrual cycles like they want you to believe. It’s a brand new computer/e-reader/mobile device/piece of awesome.

The Good News

It’s pretty yummy. Starting at $499, we think it will probably be worth every penny. You’ll be able to (attempt to) get yours in approximately 60 days. However, it may be pretty tough to find one immediately after launch.

The operating system will be a mix of the iPhone and Mac OS X. This means the iPad will also have an app for that, which is good news since iPhone apps will allow you to do pretty much anything… and we mean anything. Along with iPhone apps, developers have begun creating new apps specifically for the iPad. We’re excited to see how developers utilize the new hardware.

In order to compete with Amazon’s Kindle, the iPad will include an ebook store called iBook. How quaint. Its selection won’t be nearly as large as Amazon’s, though that gap will close in due time.

As for the workaholics, Apple decided to create a new iWork suite just for the iPad. Thus, you’ll be able to work and play with the same device.

The Bad News

It’s kinda ugly. Sorry to say, but it’s not the sexy device we were hoping for. Also, the name iPad makes us cringe. They probably should have spent more time on that.

Apple must have been drunk, but they decided not to include the ability to multitask. Yes, that’s correct. So if you want to surf the web, listen to iTunes, chat and write a document you’ll have to stick to your Mac.

Another beverage-induced decision was to not include any cameras. One would think the inclusion of a webcam or a backside camera would be no question, especially considering its mobile purpose. Unfortunately we’re finding out this is not the case.

Lastly, we’re hearing it won’t support Flash, at least right away. This is a sad story for people who wanted to watch videos on Youtube or play games requiring flash.

After some time spent using the device, we’re pretty confident in saying the good will outweigh the bad. Also, we’re glad it wasn’t made to compete with tampons.

I’m a fan of Apple, but the iPad seems like a rushed idea. It’s almost as if someone at Apple caught wind of the tablet rumors and rushed a product out just to take advantage of the free press.

No flash is a killer, being it is a mobile web/entertainment platform. No multitasking is rough but doesn’t necessarily kill it for me as much as no Flash. I like the idea of the device being an e-reader, but LCD is harsh on the eyes where e-paper allows you to read as usual.

All-in-all, I like the idea of an Apple slate. I just think the execution is at best weak, at worst stupid.

It was terribly rushed. Why on earth wouldn’t they just use Mac OS X instead of a hybrid iPhone OS? There was so much speculation about the device, I think they had no choice but to spit something out.

The 2nd generation iPad should blow this first one out of the water.

Nice work. I saw something online about the iPad, and figured you’d have a piece of wonderfulness on it.

Yeah, I think Apple is definitely withholding so they can already have their next 6 generations of this thing mapped out.

“Pay us $499 for this one right now…be disappointed…then buy the 2G one in a year (for another $499) that has one of the features that this one should have had in the first place.” Rinse & repeat.
